Should I be straight with psychiatrist and ask him for a prescription?

Throughout college I was taking 1mg xanax a day(never more) for 6 years, yes six year plan. It was prescribed by the campus doctor....Anyway when I got out and lost my free health care and haven't taken drugs of any kind for a year. It has been the worst year of my life, I have accrued 20,000.00 in medical bills in tests of all kinds, convinced there is something wrong with my heart/lungs. Nothing has been found and I've had EVERY test. I am feeling that this may all be due to anxiety and I think that I need to be put back on medication. The last time I told my psych my story he didn't prescribe me anything but cognitive therapy. I'm seeing him today for the second time, should I just ask him straight up for the prescription? I feel I need this because I felt normal for 6 years while taking this drug and have felt horrible mentally and physically without it. I don't know how he will react if I just ask him. My buddy told me to just describe the symptoms that require xanax, my other friend said to just straight up ask him for it? I know now that I was addicted to it and just never able to cope without it for a year. I also know that I can handle taking it safely without increasing dosage. Thanks in advance.
