What's the deal when medications are on back order?

I am currently prescribed the drug Xanax and have been receiving the one marked with the double g's. Now I can't seem to get them from any pharmacy they all claim they are on back order and they only have single g Xanax's . What's up with that? If anyone knows what company produces the double g's I'd like a name.
