Do petitions really work?

Our school is making really stupid rules about sixth form uniforms, me and a friend wanna do a facebook petition to get asmany people from our school to sign it, but is there any real point in it wll our school actually pay some attention to it and change the rules or is it pointless? what do you think do petitions like these really work?
